THE 2010 Budget announced by the Prime Minister last Friday has brought smiles to expatriates planning to spend more time here.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in his maiden budget announced that the government would be making it easier for talented and skilled expatriates to get permanent residence (PR) status in a bid to drive the economy forward.

He said visas would automatically be granted to working family members within 14 days for those coming to work here, in addition to the extension of PR status to foreigners married to Malaysian women.

OUTSPOKEN woman lawyer Saraswathy Kandasamy and two others are expected to be the first MIC members to be  sacked from the party after its recent elections for breach of discipline.

The trio, all strong allies of defeated deputy presidential candidate Datuk S. Subramaniam, will appear individually before the party’s disciplinary committee today — and the lady is not about to go down without a fight.

First, she intends to remove the discipline master Tan Sri K.S. Nijhar from hearing the matter on the grounds that he is guilty of indiscipline as well.

SOME six months ago, a Malay Mail probe discovered that coupon taxi operators are making a killing by  charging higher taxi fares — and emerging as the new rogues in public transportation in the Klang Valley.

Ironically, these operators were appointed by the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) to eradicate “rogue cabbies” who refuse to use meters and charge exorbitant fares.

EXECUTIVE council members of Transparency International, Malaysia (TI-M) are no longer threatening to quit the international body as a sign of protest, its acting president Datuk Mohamed Iqbal said.

A PICKPOCKET on a busy KTM Komuter train was caught yesterday, thanks to the trained eye of a security officer.

Security officer Muralli Krishnan, 28, was returning home with a friend after watching a movie. They took the Komuter train at the Mid Valley station and were heading to Sungai Buloh.

As soon as he got on the train, he noticed a man in his 30s behaving suspiciously. He suspected something a miss as the man was walking fast after entering the first door and was trying to make his way to the second door.

POLICE believe they have solved Monday's Taman Connaught jewellery store robbery. The robbers staged a daring goldsmith heist without any masks or disguises and used a car that was stolen in Kepong.

 

The robbers got away with about RM150,000 worth of jewellery. About 2.30pm yesterday, police tracked the stolen vehicle to a hotel in Kajang.

THE controversial Klang Sentral bus terminal will not become a white elephant, its developer has promised, saying it has “many plans to revive” the RM12 million complex on Jalan Meru.

NPO Development Sdn Bhd is focusing on doing everything in its power to resuscitate the terminal, its director Charmaine Lim said. The closure of Terminal B that Malay Mail reported, she said, was only a temporary move to accommodate renovation works.

“We are building a covered pedestrian walkway to link terminals A and B, and Terminal B will be reopened soon.”

(MACC) for help, claiming there has been foul play in the land deal between Tabung Projek Perumahan Terbengkalai (TPPT) Sdn Bhd and Melati Ehsan Holdings.

Representatives from Jalan Bukit Kerayong and Jalan Papan lodged a report at the State MACC office in Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, yesterday morning accompanied by Klang MP Charles Santiago, Kapar MP S. Manikavasagam and several members of the public.

TABUNG Projek Perumahan Terbengkalai (TPPT) Sdn Bhd, the initial developer of Jalan Bukit Kerayong and Jalan Papan, Pandamaran has finally broken its silence over the controversial matter.

TPPT, which is a subsidiary company of Bank Negara, sent a letter to Klang Member of Parliament Charles Santiago to explain their position in the matter.

According to managing director Hidzir Yahya, many efforts were taken by the developer to resolve the matter but failed as residents were asking for unreasonable compensation.

SECURITY guard R. Suresh who was brutally killed during a robbery at a garment factory in Telok Gong in Klang yesterday leaves a young grieving family.

The 36-year-old leaves a wife, who is an administrative clerk, and four young children aged seven, six and three years and an eight-month-old baby.

“He was an amazing father who always wanted the best for his children,” said younger brother Yajesh, 34.

SELANGOR Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim yesterday slammed the Selangor Religious Department (Jais) officers for conducting spot checks on convenience stores around Shah Alam to nab store workers who handled alcoholic beverages.

HAPHAZARD parking has been reduced by 70 per cent along Jalan Tengku Kelana or better known as Little India after the Klang Municipal Council placed grilles along its pedestrian walkway about a month ago.

Malay Mail visited the popular tourist spot yesterday and many passersby and shopkeepers applauded the council's bold move to place the grilles which helped stop the haphazard parking.

THE Ministry of Health’s Deputy Director of Disease Control, Dr Zainudin Abdul Wahab said yesterday that a referral letter is not required for anybody to get tested for H1N1.

Zainudin was referring to the case of M. Nirmala Devi’s as reported by the Malay Mail yesterday. Nirmala was told to get a referral letter from a clinic when she went to get herself tested for the virus at Klang Hospital.

THE shutters have finally come down at Terminal B of the ill-fated Klang Sentral after nine months. The only shop that was operating within Terminal B closed when the terminal was closed two months ago.

The terminal looks like a ghost town — an apt description as the deserted building has no passengers and no bus operators. No one was around.
