PETALING JAYA: THE Selangor Cybercafe Owners Association (PPPCS) is hoping the State government will adopt the self-regulatory proposals it submitted so that uniform enforcement rules will be applied by other local councils.

A committee member said all association members will abide by these guidelines to reduce misunderstanding among local authorities, given that cybercafés have been designated ‘high risk’ enterprises.

Among key proposals are clear glass fronts so that the underaged can no longer hide and loiter unattended by guardians.

PETALING JAYA: Action to curtail the Ah Long menace by the Petaling Jaya City Council has seen the termination of 110 cellphone numbers advertised on banners and buntings by the illegal moneylenders.

Its legal assistant, Yusof Che Aziz, said the numbers were terminated after being referred to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) last December. A total of 170 mobile numbers were passed on to MCMC by the council during its campaign to rid the city of the menace early last year.

KUALA LUMPUR: It will take another year before the National Health Financing Scheme, designed to make healthcare affordable, can be implemented, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

This is because it involves reviewing the Medical Act 1972, which the ministry is commissioning, and
eventually having it discussed with all relevant parties.

"We also have to go through the mechanisms with Bank Negara before doing the same with the National Economic Council and then talking to the stakeholders," Liow told The Malay Mail.

KUALA LUMPUR: To get the public to increase reports to Talian Nur — the helpline to report various abuses — the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will heighten awareness on the service.

“We will conduct more campaigns to encourage the public to call Talian Nur to lodge complaints,” said its Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

Introduced in 2007, many were still ignorant of the service — despite it being a hotline for victims of domestic violence, child abuse, spousal abuses and natural disasters — to seek help.

KUALA LUMPUR: A heavy fine awaits both bus operators and their employees should they be involved in fatal accidents.

The Pan-Malaysian Bus Operators Association has agreed to a steeper fine. But, the association also indicated that it needed time to get clarification over some grey areas.

PETALING JAYA: Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) will be using its new four-car train for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system on its Subang and Puchong extension route.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said this during the RapidKL's LRT inspection ceremony of the new trains for the Kelana Jaya line this morning.

Asked if there is a possibility of Prasarana extending its line to Shah Alam, the minister said the focus for now is on its Subang, Puchong and Ampang lines.

PUTRAJAYA: The next sector under the watchful eye of the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry is the hairdressing industry, its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Blaming crime and social ills on Africans and moving to tackle it through a Cabinet task force, has not gone down well with non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

They say it is not only discriminating against these people but also stereotyping them, for they could be genuine tourists and students.

This move by the government could only backfire, they cautioned. Suara Rakyat Malaysia coordinator Tah Moon Hui believes the number of foreigners involved in crime in the country is very low.
