MADRID: Sevilla have agreed to sign goalkeeper Diego Lopez (pic) from relegated Villarreal on a five-year contract, the two Spanish clubs confirmed yesterday morning.

The 30-year-old former understudy to Iker Casillas at Real Madrid, has been at Villarreal for the last five seasons and helped them finish second in La Liga in 2008.

BERLIN: Stricken Bayern Munich managed to beat Holland 3-2 in an badly-timed friendly yesterday morning, played less than 72 hours after their traumatic Champions League final defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

A 33,000 crowd watched the match at the Allianz Arena, where Bayern suffered their penalty shootout defeat against the English Premier League side on Saturday.

Both teams fielded mainly second-string line-ups while goalkeeper Joerg Butt, defender Breno and forward Ivica Olic all made their final appearances for Bayern.

LONDON: IRELAND and Munster back-row forward Denis Leamy announced his retirement from rugby yesterday because of a hip injury.

Leamy, 30, won 57 caps for Ireland and was part of the 2009 Six Nations Grand Slam winning squad.

LONDON: Bruno Senna's Williams car came through the Spanish Grand Prix garage fire relatively undamaged and the Brazilian will use it in Monaco again this weekend, the Formula One team said yesterday.

The car had been in the Circuit de Catalunya garage when the fire broke out as the team posed for a victory photograph following Pastor Maldonado’s first F1 win eight days ago.

Williams’ chief operations engineer Mark Gillan said in a team preview that while preparations for Monaco had been “somewhat hampered” by the fire, the team was ready to go racing.

LONDON: The Olympic flame went out yesterday for the first time during the torch relay around Britain ahead of the London Games because of a “malfunctioning burner”, organisers said.

The torch was attached to 23-year-old David Follett’s wheelchair when it went out on its way from Exeter to Taunton in southwest England on the third day of the 70-day relay.

The torch design had been tested at BMW’s climatic centre in Munich to ensure it could stay alight in all weather conditions.

PARIS: Two people were killed and 15 others injured when a rally car ploughed into spectators during a race in the Var region of southern France, emergency services said yesterday.

The car flew off a curve at Plan-de-la-Tour, near the city of Toulon on France’s Mediterranean coast.

A local public prosecutor, Danielle Drouy-Ayral, said a race marshal and a spectator had been killed.
