PETALING JAYA: The Sessions Court trial here of Constable V. Navindran who is charged with two counts of causing grievous hurt to car theft suspect A. Kugan turned into a discussion on whether a magistrate could give evidence in court this morning.

The prosecution's 10th witness, magistrate Ho Kwong Chin, who heard Kugan's remand proceedings on Jan 15 last year, started a short debate when he told the court that he wished to invoke Section 121 of the Evidence Act 1950.

KUALA LUMPUR: It is a "fair" and "reasonable" amount to compensate a golfer who was bitten by a crocodile  while playing at a resort in Malacca in 2004.

The High Court today ordered A'Famosa Golf Resort Bhd to pay RM43,000 to a company director who sued the resort in Malacca after he was attacked and bitten by a crocodile in 2004.

By consent of the defendant, High Court judge Harmindar Singh Dhaliwal recorded the judgement for A'Famosa to pay Hong Kee Siong, 48, of Taman Sungai Besi the amount for general damages and legal  costs.

PETALING JAYA: A bouncer captain at a hotel bar in Section 16 was badly injured when he crashed into a stationary car yesterday afternoon.

In the accident at about 3pm, Mohana Sundram, 31, was riding his Honda EX-5 when he collided into the back of a white Toyota Camry that had stopped at a junction on Jalan 16/11.

The force of the crash threw Mohana off his bike and when he landed, he could not pick himself up.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 46-year-old man charged for sodomising his 11-year-old niece in 2008 will not only have to return behind bars but will be sent to a mental hospital for checks.

This was because the man's stepbrother, Juhidi Mat Amin, 40, today told the Sessions Court today that he wanted a RM10,000 bail to be returned to him, effectively putting the accused, lorry driver Basri Rafie, back in jail.

KUALA LUMPUR: A police constable pleaded not guilty after he was charged for shooting his fiance at the sessions court today.

T. Kavindran, 30, was charged with attempt to murder by shooting Prema Ganason, 24, with a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver at her home at Block D-10-09 Kg Kerinchi in Pantai Dalam.

The alleged offence occurred at about 9.40pm on March 2. Deputy public prosecutor Charanjit Singh objected to bail as he said the offence was non-bailable.

KUALA LUMPUR: A female factory manager lost RM40,000 in cash when she was robbed by armed men incars who escaped after ambushing her near a bank last Friday.

The victim, who only wanted to be known as Ooi, said she went to a bank near her factory in the Bukit Rahman Putra industrial area, Sungai Buloh, with two other workers at 1am on March 5.

"I was apparently tailed when I withdrew RM40,000 from the bank as pay for my workers for Chinese New Year and overtime," she said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Six Myanmar nationals were acquitted of murdering their countryman by the High Court here this morning.

The accused; Van Duh Chung, 26, Hassan Ali Juhar, 21, Mohd Abbas Mohd Hussain, 22, Nur Alan Mohd Hussain, 24, Kokoo Ibrahim, 22, and a man only identified as Yusof, 36, were jointly charged with murdering fellow Myanmar national, Omar Faruk Osman.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are looking into using the Emergency (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) Ordinance 1969 against five notorious “Jalit Gang” robbers.

Police sources said the five, arrested late last month, were being remanded while investigations continued.

“We are still trying to uncover more cases they may have committed and at the same time, hunt for other members of the gang,” said the source.

Brickfields police said seven other gang members, aged between 27 and 32, were still on the loose.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 47-year-old lawyer was today sentenced to two years' jail and four strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to criminal breach of trust (CBT) amounting to almost RM100,000.

Sessions Court judge J. Rozana Ali Yusoff sentenced Noor Hadi Sallehon, saying that her ruling considered the serious nature of the offence.

Deputy public prosecutor Hamidi Mohd Noh and C. Vignesh Kumar prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Shamsul Sulaiman.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 35-year-old jobless man pleaded not guilty this afternoon to causing the death of a senior citizen at the sessions court here.

K. Kanagaraja, an ex-construction worker from Perak, was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which caused the death of Low Kim Chuan, 74 at a toddy shop on Jalan Sentul Manis, in Sentul at around 6pm on Feb 21.

It was reported that in the incident, the victim, Low, was sitting at the toddy shop when he got into a tussle with a man.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 43-year-old businessman was found guilty of bribing a police officer in 2005 and sentenced to a year's jail and fined RM50,000 by the Sessions Court here this morning.

Judge Rosbiahanin Arifin also ordered the accused, Wong Soo Keong, to serve another 12 months if the fine is not paid.

Wong was previously charged with bribing a Bukit Aman D7 (Anti-vice, gambling and secret socities division) officer, ASP Rohan Shah Ahmad, at 1.15am at Wisma Indah in Cheras.

Dr Abdul Karim Tajudin, the Serdang Hospital forensics department head and a pathologist since 1983, earlier told the court of his duties and qualifications, adding that he had performed more than 250,000 post-mortems in his career.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three robbers wearing surgical masks and armed with parang escaped with three cars worth about RM1.27 million after breaking into a bungalow in Taman OUG.

In the 4am incident on Tuesday at Lorong Hujan 2, the victims, an elderly couple in their 70s and their 20-something engineer son, were said to have been asleep in their home.

Police sources said the three masked men were spotted loitering in the area before climbing into the victims' house via a vacant home.
