MY parents celebrated the liberation of this country from the Japanese by getting married and having me a year later at the midpoint of the century, attended by a midwife in the government quarters in Kampung Pandan.

A few months later, this young  family was shifted to Jalan Rozario, home for the next 23 years of my life, till dad retired, and I was into my first year of not working on my Masters thesis (until the last three months of the fifth year).

THERE's a programme on MTV that I find depressing. A few minutes after the first time it caught my eye, I do not linger whenever it surfaces in my channel-zapping.

 

It's reality TV at its most banal and pathetic - a bunch of American no-lifers obsessing over some celebrity like J-Lo or Britney, and undergoing a makeover, not just in their wardrobe, but also going under the knife to change the face and body they can't bear seeing in the mirror.
