MDeC eyes RM2b investments for ICT service sector
CYBERJAYA: The Multimedia Development Corp Bhd (MDeC) is confident of attracting RM2 billion in investments for the information and communications technology (ICT) services sector this year.
Its chief executive officer, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, said the ICT sector received RM2 billion in investments last year, where RM1 billion was from IBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
"Following the support of the Minister of Trade and Industry (Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed), we will continue to target the same amount (of investment) this year.
"We are on track for the first quarter of this year," he told reporters here after the ceremony to declare IBM Global Delivery Centre (GDC) Malaysia open for business by Mustapa here yesterday.
Also present was general manager for global technology delivery and delivery excellence, IBM Corp, Patt Cronin.
Meanwhile, Mustapa said the Ministry of International Trade and Industry was committed to attract investments into the ICT sector this year.
"The sector is very important for Malaysia’s economy. It is a priority for us to further stimulate the economy growth for the country," he said.
Last year, Mustapa said, IT sector contributed 1.5 per cent of gross national income.
