KLANG MP Charles Santiago and Meru State assemblyman Dr Abdul Rani Osman have donated 400 new books to the Klang district library. They forked out RM2,500 each to buy the books for the library, because they felt that new books were needed to encourage the younger generation to start reading.

"We have selected these books to give residents of Klang a broader look at things. We need our people to be more analytical and prepared for the global world," said Abdul Rani.

Santiago added that "by reading, we can create an intellectual society and encourage writing."

BOOKS that compile newspaper columns are usually as diverting as someone else’s jumbled laundry, but this is a happy exception.

It helps that I had never read any of the pieces here before.

I mistook Lydia Teh’s Word’s Up, Eh Poh Nim? column in The Star for some kind of simple grammar guide, so never felt compelled to go any further because I have been told that my Englands is already quite well.

Well, the joke’s on me!
